Optical Broadband Working Group
Led by: Rajeev Ram and Fred Leonberger (MIT)

A key question for future growth of optical broadband access is: Which optical architectures will enable most effective growth of user services and bandwidth? This working group explores architectural options, while examining how advances in optical and electronic components can enable the architectures. The group's activities are closely coupled to a modeling study of capex and opex for FTTx systems. It is a joint working group of the Communications Futures Program and MIT's Center for Integrated Photonics Systems (CIPS).
Research topics include:
- mapping network architecture to device requirements
- dynamic bandwidth allocation in the physical layer
- self-install optical network units (ONUs) and fiber terminations
